What Happens When Players Like You Get in a Room Together
Eight weeks. One stage. Here’s what it’s all about.
The Course
Find Your Band
You already know how to play. You can comp chords, play a melody, nail that gnarly riff. But there’s something that happens when you meet and play with other musicians — something that can’t happen alone in your practice room. Songs take on a life of their own. Your ears open wide and you hear things you never heard before. You play things you didn’t know you could play.
Over eight Tuesday evenings, a small group of intermediate and advanced guitar, ukulele and bass players will come together to learn, arrange, and perform 6 to 8 songs — spanning a variety of styles and keys — under the guidance of master guitarist and teacher Joseph Brenna. Along the way, Joseph will teach you the Brenna Method: an innovative approach to learning and playing that will change and expand what you see, feel, and hear every time you pick up your guitar.
Each session builds on the last. It’s a workshop, a band room, and a creative community — all in one.
The course culminates in a fully staged final performance — with sound, lights, and multi-camera video — open to family and friends. It’s a real gig. You’ll be ready for it.

The Brenna Method
“The whole purpose of this method is to help you be the musical person you want to be in that moment when you pick up your guitar to play. You will unlock its secrets when you hold its keys: knowing the notes in music, and how to bring them together to produce the whole spectrum of sounds and emotions.”
— Joseph Brenna
01
Light Up Your Fretboard
With a Brenna Method fretboard map on your guitar, our 12 patented Note Icons — one for each of the 12 musical notes — make every note, chord, and scale instantly visible on your guitar or bass.
After spending just one hour learning the Note Icons, and applying a fretboard map to your instrument, you’ll see and understand more about music and your guitar than most players learn in a lifetime.
02
Your Guitar Demystified
If your fretboard seems sprawling and chaotic, you’re not alone. Our Method reveals the hidden simplicity beneath the surface: how everything we play is just variations of 4 chords, 12 intervals, and 5 zones on your fretboard.
03
The Power of Community
Our Method works together with all the things that got you excited to play in the first place: learning songs, listening to your favorite players, developing your technique — and most importantly, playing with other people.
This course brings it all together.
You’ll break free of rote patterns and start making soulful music. You’ll no longer be limited by what you’ve memorized — you’ll be guided by what you hear and feel. You’ll begin playing more expressively, with greater freedom.
“The Brenna Method anchored me — suddenly I knew where everything was on the guitar. I hear and understand music differently now, and I’m taking it to another level.”
— Don Goulart
“Joseph has been, hands down, my favorite guitar teacher of all time. He has a gentle way about him but he will light a fire under you to improve, all the while shining a light on your strengths. He’s incredibly organized and has focused my practice so I am really achieving what I want. Pretty much, in my mind, the perfect teacher.”
— Liza Oxnard Aratow
Your Instructor
Learn with a Master
Equally at home in jazz, blues, funk, rock, R&B and folk, Joseph Brenna meets every student with curiosity, warmth, and a passion for helping you develop your unique musical voice.
Joseph is a critically acclaimed guitarist, composer, recording artist, and master teacher. For more than three decades he’s guided over 1,000 students to reach their creative potential on guitar. Trained at Brown University and Berklee College of Music and seasoned by years on the road as a touring musician, Joseph brings deep musicianship and a gift for making complex ideas immediate and accessible.
— Lexington News-Gazette
Seeing guitarists of all kinds struggle to achieve their musical dreams, Joseph set out to find a faster, more intuitive way for players to truly understand music and their instrument. The result is the Brenna Method — and over 14 years, it has proven itself in the progress, passion, and music of his students.
