Gary Marcus has released a unique and insightful book about how we learn guitar, entitled Guitar Zero, The New Musician and the Science of Learning.

Marcus is a cognitive psychologist and director of the NYU Center for Language and Music, and a lifelong guitarist wannabe – that is until he spent his sabbatical learning to play. Despite something akin to a kind of rhythmic dyslexia, it sounds like he pulled it off. And more importantly for the rest of us, he produced a fascinating book that examines not only how children and adults learn music, but also how to practice, what makes a good teacher (and student), talent versus effort, how to write a great song, and much, much more.

An extremely worthwhile book, I’m on my second read and I recommend it to everyone. Check out the profile of Gary in the NYT for more.
